Lonely
The Composition Challenge posted by Layne Cook
This little painting is my entry for "The Composition Challange" by Lane Cook.
I just simplyfied my cropped part of the picture to make it more calm and intimate. Like that it became a very quiet scene. Reminds me of those italian mountain villages that always seem death during the three hours at noon in the summer.

Without Water I (4x4)
Last week I did a lot of paintings with this one sunflower and some vases in different compositions. I will post them all piece by piece the coming week.
This one is a small one i did, 4x4 inch with the withered sunflower, that one still can keep and let it dry for the seed.
Moreover I started an experiment: A fellow painter advised me always to paint a smaller piece previous to the "master piece", like a sketch, in order to improve myself. I did this now two times and it worked out very well I think.
Now what will I do with those small pieces?
I would give it as a gift for every one who purchases a 6x6 inch painting by me, that would be more than 60 dollar on ebay.

My Tools
$ 50
The paint what you paint with challenge posted by Carol Marine
Thank you very much for your comments. Well these are few of the "tools" i'm usually working with. Flat brushes, the smaller ones for the small paintings, the big one for bigger paintings (already long long time ago)... and the bottles - I'm sorry, but I have to keep the substance secret ;-)

Anniversary Gift
$ 50
This is a gift from my boyfriend for our anniversary this year.
What you can't see on my profile photo is, that i'm usually wearing glasses that have a golden kind of strip on each side of the frame. And these golden ear studs fit perfectly to my glasses (very very important! ;-))

Olio e Fiore
As you can imagine during the time I lived in Venice, I enjoyed the Italian food very much. They have such fantastic good food, that is tasty even if you eat it kind of pure - like prociutto crudo (= raw ham) on a piece of pane, even simply olio mixed with a bit aglio (= garlic) and peperoncino (= chilli peppers), used as a sauce for pasta (called Pasta aglio e oglio) is soooo tasty. Or a piece of that tasty pecorino - mhhhhh so good (litterally "little sheep" = sheeps cheese, but not feta-like).
Since I returned I hardly go to those so called "Italian Restaurants" here - because most of them don't prepare the food real italian like. But one place though is really cool it's a Pizzaria called "I due forni". There the pizza really tastes like in Italia. They also claim the waiters are real Italian because they are very unfriendly, but I don't think it's THE attribute of italian waiters, usually they've been very kind to us.
Now from time to time my family orders some food from the Tuskany, in a package that contains one entire pecorino, some bottles of this olio d'olive (like the one I painted this weekend) and some bottles of good vine.

Shrimp with Orange Slices
There opened a new supermarket (Kaisers) next to our place that has an incredible wide variety of fish, so it happened that I tried out some fish this weekend. And I couldn't pass by the shrimps without buying one to paint it.

"Live long and prosper"
These two figures belong to my boyfriend. They both embody Mr. Spock , main character of Star Trek, the aged one and the young one.
The young figure (in blue) says, after pressing a small button on its back "Das ist höchst unlogisch" - "That would be unwise". The older one says "Frieden, und ein langes Leben" - "Live long and prosper"

Porcelain Milk Cow
This is an old fashioned household article. It is used as a milk jug. There's hole at the back of this cow and a hole where the mouth is so that you can poor out the milk by holding it at it's tail. I made picture of the original (below).

Three ballet dancer
When I finished this painting I showed it proudly to my boyfriend, to hear his critics ( he is a graduated artist, so attention please!). He said to me, that he likes the style, but finds the motif so depressing . I ask him what he finds so depressing about these little peppers dancing in the sun like ballet dancers. He looked at me stunned and said: Those are not ballet dancers they look like poor guys, staying in front of a firing squad. Then I looked at it again and I realized, that maybe the theatrical straight light from one side and those some how crooked figures may cause an association like... mhhh but I really didn't intend to paint those poor guys!! I would be curious what you see it this painting?

Demo Lincoln
I wanted to show you how I developed the Lincoln portrait.
I used a gessoed board, that was already prepared for a portrait ( skin-colored).At first I added some guidelines to the photography in order to keep the proportions right (in the end the face got a bid too long though), then I painted the dark parts, that are mainly the area around his eyes and his beard and later on his dark suit ( I assumed it must have been black and his bow tie gray). Then I added some color that I had in my mind would go well with his face. This step was the most difficult part of this challenge, because you had to somehow invent the colors. After I had an idea of the colors I added some lights to the nose, eyes and chemise. At the end I elaborated some important parts like again his eyes, his cheeks, mouth and finally I densified the background and his suit. Done :-)

Cherries III
Yesterday I discoverd cherries in the supermarket. This is not the season for cherries here. But they looked so tasty, that I bought a hand full (at the price of 7€/kg) in order to paint them.

Today I also made a "sketch" for the portrait I'm planning to paint of my grandfather, who died last year at the age of 90. I did this from a photo we took of him during the last year of his life.
This is the final portrait of my grandfather. It's much better than the sketch, though I really love the sketch too(that is why I also have let it framed).
The latest one will be the birthday present for my mother.
